Bitcoin Hits the Brakes at $84K as Oil Rebounds and $681M Exits ETFs

Bitcoin faces a volatile trading session as oil prices recover above $92, spot Bitcoin ETFs record significant withdrawals, and altcoins post gains across the cryptocurrency market.
Bitcoin Price Retreats as Oil Prices Rebound
Bitcoin started the trading session climbing toward $84,000 before reversing its early gains as global oil prices recovered.
The cryptocurrency market reacted to developments in international energy markets following an announcement from President Donald Trump involving Russian diesel supplies.
Trump announced an agreement for Russia to supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel fuel to international and domestic markets, representing a partial easing of U.S. restrictions on Russian oil imports.
The announcement also included claims of an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian officials disputed those claims, while Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure reportedly continued.
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil initially fell more than 1%, dropping below $90 per barrel, before recovering to $92.63, an increase of 0.8% on the day.
Bitcoin subsequently surrendered its earlier gains, adding another volatile session to the cryptocurrency market.
Bitcoin ETFs Record $681 Million in Weekly Outflows
One of the biggest developments in the Bitcoin market came from U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
According to SoSoValue data cited in the original report, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $681 million in net outflows last week, their largest weekly withdrawal total since June.
The majority of those withdrawals occurred on October 7 and October 8.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs provide investors with exposure to Bitcoin through traditional financial markets, making their daily inflows and outflows a widely followed measure of institutional investment activity.
Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus Exchange, highlighted the recent withdrawals as an indication of cautious institutional sentiment.
The ETF activity coincided with elevated U.S. Treasury yields and ongoing developments across global financial markets.
Altcoins Rally as Avalanche, Chainlink and Solana Gain
While Bitcoin experienced a pullback, several major altcoins recorded gains over the previous 24 hours.
Avalanche (AVAX) rose 5.1% to $10.91, while Chainlink (LINK) gained 2.4% to reach $13.35.
Solana (SOL) increased 1.2%, with BNB, XRP, Dogecoin (DOGE) and Cardano (ADA) also posting positive price movements.
Additional cryptocurrencies, including NEAR Protocol (NEAR), Filecoin (FIL) and LayerZero (ZRO), recorded gains ranging from 8% to 12% during the reporting period.
According to Purvang Mashru, lead analyst at BitDelta India, nine of the ten largest digital assets registered gains over the previous 24 hours.
The contrasting performance highlighted differences in trading activity between Bitcoin and the broader altcoin market.
Bitcoin Price Analysis: $82,000 Support in Focus
Following Bitcoin’s retreat from $84,000, market analysts identified $82,000 as an important technical support level.
Technical support refers to a price area where an asset has previously experienced increased buying activity.
Both Vikram Subburaj and Purvang Mashru highlighted the $82,000 level in their assessments of Bitcoin’s recent market performance.
The analysts also identified the scheduled October 14 U.S. inflation report as the next significant economic event on the calendar.
The report will provide updated information about consumer price inflation in the United States.
Why This Matters for Bitcoin and the Cryptocurrency Market
Bitcoin’s latest price movements occurred alongside several significant developments across global financial markets.
The recovery in crude oil prices, $681 million in weekly spot Bitcoin ETF outflows, and elevated U.S. Treasury yields formed part of the broader economic backdrop.
Meanwhile, gains across Avalanche, Chainlink, Solana and other cryptocurrencies demonstrated varied performance across the digital asset market.
The developments highlight the relationship between Bitcoin trading activity, institutional cryptocurrency investment, global energy prices and U.S. economic data.
As of the reporting period, Bitcoin’s retreat from $84,000, the $681 million in ETF withdrawals and the performance of major altcoins were among the leading stories shaping cryptocurrency market coverage.
